Night 3

Dear Blog,

We took a night off of all the initiation rituals, so the pledges could collect themselves after two nights of Alpha Sigma Sigma fun! As much as I would have loved to finish up all of our initiation tradition, it was nice to talk to some of the older brothers about our pledging experiences with AΣΣ. Some of them were intense. One brother broke his nose by running into a wall during one of the pledge nights! He had to walk around campus with a nose cast and a shaved head for weeks! Others had funny stories like this to tell about their experiences, but one brother got to me and it concerns me what he had to say.

He talked to me tonight about how he thinks our initiation rituals might be too much. He referred to it as “hazing.” It’s not hazing if it’s all out of brotherhood right? They’re voluntarily doing what we tell them. Usually after we play the “you don’t have to, but if you don’t do it, you’re not truly a brother” card. But that’s beside the point! Sure downing beers until you puke isn’t the safest thing in the world, but we’ve all done it. It’s the type of bond that keeps us close. They’ll understand it when they’re older. It’s not a bad thing if nobody gets seriously injured, and nobody has (a broken nose isn’t THAT bad).

What we do is okay. Isn’t it?

Until tomorrow,

Night 2

Dear Blog,

Tonight was better than last! If that’s even possible! Tonight we shaved the heads of all of our pledges. Not completely bald to start of with though! We shaved patterns! One kid supported the Friar Tuck, while another wore the reverse mohawk like a pro! Personally I like the Avatar arrow the most. Some of the pledges weren’t to sure about it at first, but we convinced them that it was all out of good brotherhood fun.

After shaving the patterns, we had them take multiple shots of a gross mixture of cheap vodka, orange juice, toothpaste, and spinach. One kid threw up within ten seconds of taking the shot. It was awesome!

The next activity on the itinerary was one of my favorites. Each pledge had to strip down to their underwear, then run and knock on the door of each sorority house and serenade whichever sorority member opened the door. In their underwear. With their funny haircuts. While they did that the rest of us just sat on our porch and laughed. I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard in my life!

When they finished, we shaved the rest of their hair off and sent them on their marry way home. It was quite a memorable night, and I was very glad I didn’t have to partake in all the embarrassing activities again. It’s much more enjoyable to watch.

Until tomorrow!

Night 1

Dear Blog,

Tonight was the first night all of the new pledges got a feel for what it means to be an Alpha Sigma Sigma brother., and let me tell you, they didn’t know what hit them! First we blindfolded them and walked them into the AΣΣ basement (which hasn’t been cleaned since last years initiation ritual, I might add. My puke from the first night is still there! How cool is that!?). Then we had each of them recite our brotherhood oath. After that is when all the fun began.

The first tradition is to drink till you puke. Drink beer that is. We line up rows upon rows of beer bottles and each pledge had to down as many as they could before they puke. The one who drinks the most before puking is labeled drink master for the first month. This mean that they don’t have to pitch in for the first month’s supply of alcoholic beverages.

Our second tradition comes after this. Each pledge needs to puke somewhere, so we have a giant kiddie pool set up in the middle of the basement. The kiddie pool is already full of various liquid substance (I wont go into what’s actually in it) before the pledges get to the basement and their puke, just adds to the concoction. Though some don’t even make it to the pool before they let it all out (like me when I was a pledge!). The second tradition involves this kiddie pool. After their fill of beer, each pledge has to swim across the kiddie pool! In my opinion, it was the best part of the night. There’s just something about people swimming in their own puke, and the various puke of others, that makes me laugh until I cry. It’s a truly beautiful thing to watch, especially when you remember that you had to do the exact same thing the year before.

And with that, we concluded our nights activities. We didn’t want to overdo it will all of traditions in one night. What fun would that be?

Until tomorrow!
